Interesting little article over on Ninemsn, well worth a read:

hxxp: news. ninemsn. com. au / national / 8252259 / make-cheating-a-crime-says-afl

"The time is right now for there to be an offence in Australia of cheating in sport which is punishable by jail. "

Mr Anderson said an appropriate maximum sentence for criminal offences related to cheating in sport would be 10 years in jail.
____

"Gambling advertising is pervasive," Mr Anderson said.

"You pick up . . . any newspaper, any television station, there's advertising of gambling.

"We're happy to do whatever is required to make sure we're adopting a responsible approach that's consistent with all other media. "

Now! Correct me if I'm wrong. . but don't betting agencies often claim to be "the official partner of the AFL"? The AFL endorse this and make millions of dollars for it, they plaster the advertising boards at the grounds with gambling companies. Every TV show shows the odds of the game when they're reviewing matches, quite often people pop up during a game in the ads and tell us what good odds we can get if we throw down a bet now. . . And now they want to push to make cheating a jailable offence? How about a simple life-time ban and the AFL can stop being such hypocrites? They are the ones who bought gambling into this sport. . .

Of course this doesn't affect me in any way as I'm not a player nor am I associated with the AFL in any which way, I'm just musing. Your thoughts? Personally I think it's a bit over the top and a fair kick to their credibilities!
Kaitalex. . I think you've missed my point here. I've got no problem with fans punting, and you're right last year they did fine a few players for betting on other games. I'm saying the AFL can't complain if more and more people want to bet and it spreads to the players with the way that we're absolutely inundated with gambling messages.

Let me give you a hypothetical: Last year we all found out how bad Fevola's gambling addiction was on the horses, now what if that had spread to Lions games and people would pay him to underperform? You would honestly be happy to send a man to jail for that? Fined and banned from the sport for life is hard enough, jail is where rapists and murderers belong. . not people who cheat in sport.

Good question. The problem is how do you prove that the gambling actually exist. i have seen games that you know in your own heart. that the result didn't read true to the form. lots of questionable umpiring decisions that can make a difference on the out come of a game. & as i have already said on this site. i rang up Mike Sheehan one day about a result on a game at the then Optus Oval. it was mentioned once on the program. but then the AFL gagged him. from writing anything in the paper about it. so you really have to wonder.

As AFL King Pro pointed out with the Pies V Crows game yesterday. the Pies would have started at a very short price. but by half time. they were a $1. 90 to win. that's far better than the 80 to 90 cents that they would have started at. & as you know. the Pies flew home to win the game.

I don't have a problem with gambling on the out come of a game. but i very much dislike this betting on the result while a game is in play. i really feel that the AFL needs to take a good long hard look at this one. because the alarm bells are going to ring one day when someone places a huge amount on a team with one betting agency. instead of spreading it. so no one notices it.
cheers.

Edit} it was announced on the news this morning that the AFL is going to investigate into a couple of episodes of betting on (player who kicks the 1st goal) betting plunges on the weekend. their looking at the prospect that there was insider information. & rightly so. this is another form of betting in the game that i don't like. it should be scrapped.

Mate, this is a rant. It is every Aussies right to have a punt, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with these companies advertising during games or sponsering clubs or the AFL itself. What is wrong is when people make a punt on a game that they have a role in. If you were to take a little bit of a look at your history books you would see that the AFL is very hard on this indeed with just last seasons players, coaching staff and even family members being fined for having a punt on games that players were involved in. Get your facts right, the AFL is well within it's rights to accept sponsorship, as long it continues to enforce the strict anti tampering laws in the way it does.

Kaitalex has this one nailed, but I will add that in legal terms, the AFL is some-what limited in its investigative capabilities and powers. A transfer of this to State or Federal Police would be a very shrewd and cost effective way of getting a more thorough result and stiffer penalties.

Rather than have to do a complete case right through to monetary penalties, the AFL would do the prelim. investigation and if warranted or suspected, cases would be passed on to be fully investigated, prosecuted and penalized by the full legal system with jail sentences added to current fines.

Sound business - not hypocracy !

Edit: Per your Fev scenario $100,000 fine is chicken feed to a $1m p. a. player (and probably tax deductable too !) If it takes a life sentence to keep AFL clean then so be it.

Insider Trading in shares carries jail sentences and it only affects buyer & seller. Players under-performing, boxers taking a dive, nobbling & Fine Cotton wring-ins, all for personal gain affects Every punter and does irrepairable harm to the sport.

Are the AFL losing the plot . YES, . . . they already have ! . They lost it when lawyer Anderson was alledgedly picked to fill a job for the boys role as AFL operations manager. As footy supporters and tax payers, we can only be thankful he is not "operations" manager at the Alfred hospital. If he was, we'd now be thinking he had arranged for personality and charisma by pass ops at St Kilda and Footscray, and the heart transplants at Carlton and Essendon .
