I am currently living in Brazil and working with a Network Marketing company. Here, they want you to sign people up with 2000 Reais (about $1200) and we don't exactly have a lot of friends with that kind of money lying around. We got in for a smaller price, but they really discourage people from doing that. What can I do to get this business going? Please help. . .

You don't need your friends to join you in this business. All you need is to learn how to talk to other people. Best source of knowledge is a series of books written by Tom Hopkins. If you are very serious then I would get all the books that he has written and read them and study his methods. He also has what he calls "boot camp" that will help you, that's something that you can do at a later date. Start with the books and see where they take you. Network marketing is very hard, and I would say that your time would be better spent building a legit business. Those types of businesses typically have a number of of issues, the first being that you are expected to convince your friends to buy stuff, which is not in your best interests.

I would find another business that has a smaller initial cost. $1200 is on the very high end. Typicall you can find network marketing companies that are around $20-$40. That might be easier to promote.
