I'm 24 and have never been in an accident, gotten pulled over, or received any kind of ticket. So even though everyone is telling me not to worry, I am a little freaked out over what happened the other day. I am not trying to place blame, because it was completely MY fault, but I feel like I made an honest mistake and don't know what to expect after this as far as a kind of fine or anything. I am a student, after all, and can't afford a whole lot right now (strict ramen noodle diet-lol).

I was lost in the city I just moved to. I was driving over an overpass when I missed my turn. I slowed, as I saw an intersection ahead and traffic stopped at a red light. I started to crawl up to the light, misjudging the space between the van ahead of me and my car. I looked over my shoulder briefly at the overpass I missed, looking for any indication that a U-Turn would be OK and trying to figure my way back onto the free way when I heard my car bump the van ahead of me. I felt really stupid and had not been paying attention. I didn't feel much of an impact, but I did hear an impact. So I jumped out of the car and let the woman know that I had bumped her van. She told me to pull over in front of a store.

We got out and looked at our vehicles. I couldn't find any marks or sign of impact on my car or her van. She acted quite nonchalant about it but we exchanged information just in case. I was a little panicked, feeling pretty stupid at this point. . . but I couldn't see any traces of an impact on either vehicle. She tried joking with me about it, telling me to relax. She said that she wasn't even going to report it because she couldn't see any signs of damage (I was going MAYBE five miles an hour when I hit the back of her van in my car).

So she gave me some directions on how to get to my destination, and I drove off. Then, about five days later (today) I get a phone call. The person on the phone was asking about the accident I was involved in on Saturday and if I was alright (asking for a statement). At first, I didn't know what they were talking about. As much as it was my fault and could have been disastrous, I truly feel like it was more of a bump and didn't feel much impact, but who knows.

I tried giving a statement but the call dropped and I was out of service until I came back home. But it looks like I will have to call tomorrow morning because it is too late now.

I'm a little freaked out. The last I knew she was laughing about it, telling me to calm down and that there was no need to report it. . . but now I get a call asking me for a statement from an insurance company?

I know I did wrong. It truly was an accident. . . . What do I need to prepare for???
* I DO have insurance and a flawless driving record. . . until now. . . UGH! =(

Everyone who's telling you not to worry is right. Accidents are just. . . accidents. Call your insurance in the morning and report it. They will take care of the rest.
